Why Certificate Ceremonies Are a Marketing Opportunity
These ceremonies are meaningful for the candidates and their families. They generate good memories and stories students and parents will love to share. In fact, Cambridge English highlights that holding a certificate ceremony is one of the best ways to “recognise, celebrate and share the progress, hard work and success of your students”, making them feel proud of their achievements.
Also, other exam boards like Trinity, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson English International Certificate (Young Learners) encourage exam centres and schools celebrating after the exam.
A celebration after the exam!
“At the end of the year at school have a celebration party/festival to praise the achievement of every student in some way in the class. All students taking the Pearson English International Certificate (Young Learners) get a certificate and this ensures an inclusive end of year certificate ceremony where everyone is celebrated.”
From “Mindfulness and Young Learners at Exam Time” by Donatella Fitzgerald,ELL Sales Manager Pearson,Italy
What’s more, having an English Certificate award ceremony to celebrate students’ achievements not only boosts morale but it also reinforces relationships with stakeholders: exam boards, parents, teachers, and, of course , the students! This leads to positive word of mouth as families will talk about the event, spreading your school’s reputation in the local community. It may also lead to more enrolment opportunities for the school.
Thirdly, award ceremonies are an extra occasion for gathering valuable visual content to support your overall language school marketing strategy, from social media posts to course presentations.
💡📷If the photos and videos taken at the certificate ceremony are planned well and then used strategically, they will help you increase visibility, generate word-of-mouth and, above all, contribute to brand building.

How to Plan a Certificate Ceremony for Language School Marketing
Those who work with me know that I’m all about planning and of course, this applies to planning what pictures and videos to take at the award ceremonies, too. When my clients have an important event, I normally brainstorm with them the key moments to capture and then they receive a checklist to guide them during the event.
Good planning ensures you take photos and videos of the award ceremony that really matters for organic and paid social media posts .
So, before the award ceremony day, make sure you take time for the following:
1.Set Up a Branded Space at the Award Ceremony

Create a photo-friendly environment. Bring your school’s roll-up banner for a nice background in pictures.
Even if the ceremony is in a simple classroom or not at your centre but at a preparation centre, a banner instantly brands every photo with your school name. Another idea is to use a branded tablecloth if you have one or create a photo booth frame which is always fun!
2.Handle Photo Permissions Early
Make sure parents and students have received, read and signed the privacy consent form for Using Student Photos Safely for Social Media Marketing prior to the day of the event. Then check which students (or parents) have not given permission to be photographed. Have a system to identify who cannot be in publicly shared photos, for example, a list or a colour coded system and brief colleagues. This will help you avoid potential conflict when using the photos on social media.
3.Prepare a Shot List
Think ahead about the moments you want to capture during the award ceremony. Jot down a shot list so no key moment is missed. This will be particularly useful if you have a member of staff taking the photos and videos.
4.Designate a Photographer
If you are the one handing out certificates then assign someone who’s not involved in this, to take photos and videos of the award ceremony. It can be a member of staff, an intern or, if you can afford it, hire a photographer. Having someone responsible for taking photos following the shot list means that you will cover most of the key moments for your visual library.

What Photos and Videos to Capture (for Reels, Posts & More)
Capturing the right exam ceremony photos for social media can transform a simple celebration into a year-round marketing asset. By thinking ahead and capturing a variety of visuals, you’ll be able to reuse the content across different platforms to create TikToks, Instagram Reels, carousels and paid social media posts or even landing pages!
Below are some essential ideas to help you take strategic photos and videos that support your language school marketing
1. Must-have Shots
Use a mix of wide, mid, and close shots to tell a visual story and also capture details.
Make sure you have these:
- Wide shots of the venue and the audience
- Students receiving certificates (without revealing personal info)
- Group photos of students with their teachers
- Details like certificates stacked on a table, branded banners, or decorations
- Moments that convey emotions (smiles, tears, clapping, hugs, etc)
These types of exam award ceremony photos work well across social media, especially when paired with thoughtful captions or quotes.
2. Moments for Videos
Short video clips are especially powerful for engagement and visibility. Even if you’re only using a smartphone, you can capture great material to use in Reels, stories or recap videos.
Some great moments to film include:
- The DOS or teacher giving a welcome speech
- A round of applause or celebration moment
- Students walking to receive their certificates
- Parents and students’ reactions and interactions
- Behind-the-scenes footage (e.g. staff setting up the room or students arriving)
These videos help bring the atmosphere of the event to life and build an emotional connection with your audience.

3. Interview Ideas for Language School Marketing Content
Including short interviews or testimonial clips in your video content can boost both trust and visibility. (Read more about How to Use Testimonials for Language School Marketing here)
Here are a few simple prompts you can use to film short but powerful interviews:
- Ask a high-performing student: “How did it feel to pass your exam ?” or “What advice would you give to next year’s candidates?”
- Ask a parent: “What made you choose this school?” or “How has your child grown through this experience?”
- Ask a teacher: “What’s the most rewarding part of preparing students for exams?”
These videos for language school marketing work particularly well as social proof and you can post them on your feed, stories, or in a paid ad.
Pro Tip:You don’t need fancy equipment! A modern smartphone on a tripod can capture high-quality video. Just test the audio for speeches, or consider using a microphone for clearer sound if needed. Keep videos short and engaging for social media (30–60 second highlights are ideal). You can Take Amazing Photos with your smart phone, trust me!
Award Ceremony Photos and Videos That Work Well for Language School Marketing
These photos and video clips will make valuable visual content to market your language school on social media either used as single pics or videos or combined to create Reels or content such as:
- A carousel post on Instagram. Fore example “Highlights from our recent Trinity Exam Ceremony”
- A recap reel ( from setup to celebration in 15 seconds)
- A testimonial post featuring a parent or teacher comment

Pro Tip: Schedule this type of content not only after exam results, but use it also at the start of a new academic year, or when launching a new course. It reinforces your school’s reputation.
Photos & Videos Ideas If You Don’t Have Parental Consent
Can you post student photos? When it comes to showcasing your language school as a successful exam centre or preparation centre for international exams, using real photos and videos is the best way to do it. However, as the vast majority of candidates are kids and teens, it is mandatory to have parental consent to share the photos publicly.
Safe Visual Ideas Without Showing Faces
If you don’t have parental consent for photos and videos, there are ways to capture moments of the ceremony that will still help you market your exam preparation centre on social media with authentic visual content while respecting students’ privacy.
Here are some ideas:
- Take photos from behind
- Zoom in on hands holding the certificate (but not showing the candidates’ details)
- Capture interactions from the side or from afar
Pair these with strong captions to tell the story without needing faces. This shows you respect privacy while still celebrating students’ achievement and you language school.
Encourage Sharing from Families
Pro Tip: Encourage students and parents to share their joy on social media after the event. For example, after the ceremony, you might announce: “Feel free to share your photos on social media and tag the school! “Use your hashtag #YourSchoolAwards and the exam board’s branded hashtag.
This turns attendees into positive promoters of your school.
Privacy & Best Practice for Student Photos
According to the article, “Opinion: Schools Need Privacy Policies, Tools to Post Student Photos,” there is a critical issue of schools unintentionally violating image privacy laws. This is due to a lack of adequate policies, procedures, or privacy-enhancing technology in place.
⚠️Avoid This Common Mistake
One of the most common award ceremony photos I see around social media is a close-up of a student holding the certificate where you can read the student’s personal details.
By doing so there’s a risk that unauthorized individuals could identify the child. So, by posting this type of photo schools are unintentionally exposing students to potentially dangerous situations.

For this reason, when capturing student photos and videos, particularly of children under 16, it is good practice to avoid revealing sensitive personal information about the student (eg name, address, etc) or anything that makes it easy to track the child.

In the case of English certificates, even with parental consent, obscuring identifying details, by blurring names on English certificates, is the best practice to uphold data privacy and protect the children’s rights.
✔️Here’s a good example of how Trinity College blurred the student’s personal details on the photo for their marketing materials.
